Vietnam Awards Mitsubishi Deal to Build $2.2 Billion Power Plant
Japan’s Mitsubishi has won a deal to build a $2.2 billion thermal power plant in central Vietnam.
The Vietnamese Ministry of Industry and Trade on January 16 awarded Japanese industrial conglomerate Mitsubishi a deal to build a thermal power plant in the central province of Ha Tinh under the Build-Operate-Transfer (BOT) format.
The $2.2-billion Vung Ang 2 thermal power plant project has a capacity of 1,200 megawatts (MW), with two 600MW turbines, the ministry said in a statement.
The first turbine of the plant, which will use imported coal for power generation, will start operation in 2021 and the second one in 2022.
Besides the Vung Ang 2 project, the ministry is working on 17 other thermal power projects with a combined capacity of 23,000MW.
Vietnam is striving to develop power generation sources to meet rising demand and accommodate fast economic growth. However, pollution from coal-fired power plants is a great concern as many of them have been built with Chinese technology.
